If you did One Aphasia Action last year (and it’s not too late to do those activities now!), you know that we love bite-sized, actionable ideas you can do from home. We wanted to keep the progress going again through Aphasia Awareness Month.
Each week, we’re giving you a fun, visually-based activity designed by a speech-language pathologist that you can do from home.
Try out this week’s activity, and if you like it, share it with others by sending a link to this post while using our #PictureAphasia hashtag.
Visual Vacation
This activity needs a communication partner. It can be someone in your home, or you can do this activity over video.
Take out some photographs from a trip you took in the past. The other person will need to be able to guess the photo, so make sure they’ve seen this picture before. Place the pictures so the other person cannot see the image.
Say a word or words that would identify something about the image. For instance, if it’s a picture of yourself in front of the Eiffel Tower, you may say EUROPE or FRANCE or BUILDING. Try not to give too big a clue at first.
Your communication partner can make a guess. If they don’t guess the correct image, give them a little more information:
- When did you go? (for example: July, 2016, or after our wedding)
- What was the weather like in the picture?
- What were you wearing?
- How long ago was the trip?
- How did you get there?
After they guess the photo, talk about the trip. Why did you choose this photo? What did you love about the trip? Talk about a delicious meal or a spectacular site. Tell them why you want to repeat the trip, or why not. What would be different about the trip if you went again?
This activity helps you use a lot of where, what, why, when, who, and how questions.
